Frequently Asked Questions
Can all columns be used as structural supports?
No, not all columns have load bearing capabilities. For some columns, you may need to position a structural beam in place for support, and then install the column around it.
Can these columns be trimmed to make them shorter?
A non-tapered column can typically be trimmed to whatever size you need. A tapered column however can be trimmed up to 1/3 of the shaft and still retain its base fitting capabilities. For better results, we recommend you consult your manufacturer for more information on the trimming procedure that works best for your column.
Do split columns have load bearing capabilities?
No. Columns that have been split vertically do not have the capacity to support structures.
How do I go about fixing my split column to the post?
If it’s a purely decorative column, the most common method is to make use of L brackets at the crown and base of the shaft. To help conceal the brackets, use Tuscan capitals or bases. For columns that need to be secured to wood posts, use wood shims that fit securely and hold the post and shaft in place. For more information regarding installation of your columns, feel free to call or email and we’ll send you more detailed instructions.
What about manufacturer specifications?
Each column is unique and comes with its own special features and specifications. For additional information regarding column features, installation requirements and other guidelines, please contact the manufacturing company.
Will my columns come pre-painted?
Depending on the material of the column, it will come either ready-to-paint/stain, or it is not necessary to paint because it is already the color you desire.
I want to return my columns. What do I do?
At the time of placing an order for a column, we recommend you ask the manufacturer for details about their return policy. Each company will have their own specified return policy.
