Non-Tapered Square Columns

Architectural columns have been an integral part of modern architectural design for some time. Choices of materials, uses, and detail in ornamentation of grown since ancient times due to technological developments. One of the best examples of the quality of design available can be found in the square non-tapered column. This style of column provides the imposing elegance that many people assign to timeless public structures found in America’s civic centers and Europe’s urban centers.

Today's square non-tapered columns have Tuscan bases and capitals. The capital is the top portion of the column. The Tuscan architectural order calls for a very simple square base with a square neck that tapers to the bottom of the shaft. The top of a Tuscan square non-tapered column has a raised relief edge above the end of the shaft above which the column tapers out to a square top, or “abacus” which is the load bearing surface.

Contemporary square non-tapered columns can be manufactured from wood, vinyl, fiberglass, stone, marble or a synthetic that gives them a realistic stone or marble look. There are also choices in shaft surface design. The simplest has a plain, smooth face, which provides an adaptable surface for backyard deck structures to front door porticos.
